Founded in 2010 by Ann and Andy Kitchener, Semperfli, have successful transformed their passion for angling into a globally recognised brand.
Based in Selby, North Yorkshire, Ann and Andy noticed a big gap in the market for stronger, better‑performing fly‑tying threads so began developing their own stronger, better‑performing threads at the kitchen table. From those humble beginnings Semperfli is now a pioneering fly-fishing materials manufacturer, the company now exports to over 50 countries and offers more than 1,400 products - from Nano-Silk thread to chenilles and wires - used by fly-tiers worldwide.

Challenge
As Semperfli grew, it found itself dealing with the usual challenges that come with a busy, expanding business - higher costs, tricky international logistics, and the constant need to keep new ideas coming. Ann and Andy were keen to help their staff develop new skills and learn more about the funding opportunities that could support their growth plans.
Solution
Business North Yorkshire, worked in close partnership with Semperfli to provide guidance, connections, and targeted support across several areas:
- Funding Guidance & Applications: Business North Yorkshire’s Senior Business Adviser, Heidi Green, played a key role in helping Semperfli secure innovation and export funding. This investment enabled the purchase of new equipment and access to specialist expert consultancy, accelerating product development and global market reach.
- Workshops & Employee Development: To help Semperfli maintain a skilled and confident workforce, Business North Yorkshire delivered a programme of practical training, from first aid certification to social media skills, equipping staff with the knowledge and confidence needed to support ongoing growth.
- Strategic Support & Sounding Board Serving as a trusted advisor, Senior Business Advisor, Heidi Green, provided strategic guidance on operational challenges and acted as a sounding board for business decisions. The service also facilitated introductions to key partners and networks, opening doors to additional support on operational challenges, international trade, and business resilience amid rising energy and shipping costs.

Semperfli’s international expansion has created a remarkable story of resilience and growth. Today, over 92% of the company’s turnover comes from overseas markets, with customers across Canada, the United States, New Zealand, Europe, and beyond.
